Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
