Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
