The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – truly, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for others, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater also.
The evident and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of radical love centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts in US history.

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to that which renders it special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior.
