The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This decision was prompted by a legal ruling that invalidated her right to occupy the role.
Official Departure
The head of the Justice Department, the Attorney General, confirmed Habba's resignation on Monday. In a statement that the judicial decision made it impossible for the official to lead the department effectively.
"But do not mistake following the order as giving up," she wrote. "This battle will now stretch across the country."
Court Ruling
Her resignation comes a week after a judicial panel determined that she had been unlawfully serving as US attorney. This decision is expected to impact scores of legal proceedings in New Jersey.
The judicial panel said that a acting appointment that bypassed Senate approval violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
