Two Victims Identified in Brown University Shooting as Authorities Persist in Search for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.
Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow publicly, stating: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
An International Student
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine more persons were wounded in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”
Community Anxiety
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.
The gunman opened fire inside a room in the building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that raided the lodging found two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was detained, according to reports.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, one pupil was released from the hospital, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his potential.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
